Participatory Guarantee Systems
Certified Naturally Grown is based on the "Participatory Guarantee System" model of certification. While the PGS concept is still new to many in the United States, PGS programs have been in place for decades. They are typically a better fit for small-scale direct-market farmers, and they foster local farmer networks to strengthen the farming community through mutual support and educational opportunities.
IFOAM (the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) has established an international task force to actively support the development of the PGS model. An estimated ten thousand farmers worldwide participate in this type of peer-review certification program.
