Mountain Breeze Farm
Armuchee, Georgia
Mountain Breeze is a family-owned farm in the mountains of Northwest Georgia. Mountain Breeze Farm is about 150 feet above the nearby valley, on the flank of John's Mountain. It was cotton farmed in the early 1900's and then abandoned to forest succession. We cleared the mess to find beautiful terraces built by the cotton farmers on the high fields. We're working on soil fertility and conservation while experimenting with crop rotation and varieties. John's Mountain faces SE and heats up during the day, but gives up it's warmth slowly at night in the form of a wonderful mountain breeze that flows down the terraces. We have a microclimate with night temps averaging 7 degrees warmer than the valley (as long as the sun has been shining in the last few days!). Last frost and first frost are up to one month later/earlier than the valley below, giving us a nice extension to the season. Mountain Breeze started as Billy Morris’ garden, and before long he was growing more vegetables than he could eat! We now have about 1.5 acres in production, growing lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, swiss chard, beets, cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, corn, squash, beans, salsify, parsnips, and onions.
