Shoving Leopard Farm
Barrytown, New York
Shoving Leopard Farm is a 2-acre garden located on an historic Hudson Valley estate overlooking the Hudson River. We grow mixed vegetables and cut flowers without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. We have a small CSA, a week-end farm stand, and a pick-your-own flower labyrinth. We grow a variety of annual and perennial vegetables and small fruits on a 1.5 acre enclosed garden. The permanent vegetable beds radiate out from the center of the garden where there is a pick-your-own flower labyrinth. Although we are not Certified Organic, we use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides of any sort, relying exclusively on well-finished compost, cover crop rotations, fish emulsion, and mycelia for fertility, and crop rotation, vegetative barriers, soap and pepper sprays, chicken detail, and manual squishing for pest-control. By improving soil tilth, increasing organic matter in the soil, and promoting biodiversity in the soil, in our crops, and in the air, we create an environment that allows for a sustainable production of nutritious and abundant crops. Our hoop greenhouse is located inside the garden fence, and serves as a potting shed in early spring, a hot house in the summer, a curing station in the fall, and a refuge from weather for our hens in the winter. Our produce and fruit goes primarily to our CSA members, who come once a week throughout the season to pick up their share of the harvest. On fair weather weekends, flower bouquets and bumper crops are brought to the honor-system “farm stand” – an old blue cart – in the woods halfway down the Poet’s Walk where the Rokeby access road meets the scenic trail. We participate in winter markets such as the Tivoli Craft Fair and the Red Hook winter markets, where we bring loose leaf herbal teas, preserves, and baked goods.(This listing was last updated on April 01, 2010)
