Cherry Lane Farm
Vinton, Virginia
Since first taking root in 2007, the small Cherry Lane Farm has grown -- slowly, but purposefully. It began with horses and a personal garden, but successes with growing garlic and blackberries piqued a passion for working on the land. The site -- with only about an acre of crop land that's dedicated to garlic, onions, berries and plums -- is operated by Ryan and Gretchen Tipps. Both of us are part-time farmers and have other jobs full time, but we choose to be in our rural haven as often as possible. In addition to work, Ryan is currently pursuing a master's degree in Agriculture and Life Sciences, with a concentration in Food Safety, from Virginia Tech. All of our efforts go toward adding more and more to our farm and making our food better with every season. We grow two types of garlic (Siberian and Persian Star), three varieties of onions and have three sour plum trees that we harvest.
