Hog Mountain Farm

Flowery Branch, Georgia

Hog Mountain Farm is located on the east slope ridge line east of I-985. Three acres of the farm are currently devoted to fruit and berries, produce plots, chickens, and two bee hive areas. The first plot was started in 2008 which contained the infamous "Red Georgia Clay." It has taken three years to develop the soil into nice, loose brown soil with some areas becoming even blacker. This has been achieved through extensive mulching, composting, and introduction of worms. Plots are rotated each year to minimize the possibility of plant disease or insects. There are two product seasons. The spring season focuses on tomatoes-both hybrid and heirloom, sugar peas, asparagus, Italian beans, summer squash, peppers, okra, melons, cucumbers, onions, garlic, leeks, and others. The fall season has broccoli, collards, mustard, turnips, squash, tomatoes, peppers, Jerusalem artichokes and others. One plot is currently devoted to winter wheat. A favorite farm purchase is greens for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. The long range vegetable focus is on heirloom products for their improved varied taste and texture since there is no need for lengthy ships and handling requirements. Fruit and berries for sale include strawberries, high bush blueberries (June) and brown turkey figs (August). Jellies, jams, and preserves are also provided. The happy chickens are all Barred Rock which lays a medium to dark brown egg. They are housed over night and are out and free to roam as soon as the door opens and stay out until the sun goes down. About half their food is from free ranging and the other half is feed that has organically listed components including flax seed for the boosted Omega Three. Eggs are available as Grade A medium or large in either half or full dozen cartons. Bees were introduced in 2011 to increase vegetable pollination and later to provide honey. Only natural products are used with the bees. A major expansion is planned during the winter of 2011/12. The honey is in the raw, pure state and has the local pollen, unlike the imported honey from India, China, and Vietnam. During the farmer's market season (May-September), products may be found at the Sprouts Springs Library (Thurs 4-7) and Suwanee (Sat 8-12).
