Amitaba Gardens
Whitewater, Wisconsin
We do not use any synthetic fertilizers or chemicals and we try to limit the amount of fuel that is used to transport our food. We use cover crops to suppress weeds, fertilize soil and to increase soil aeration and percolation; this also mitigates the amount of soil erosion and leaching into our waterways. For pest control, we use integrated pest management tactics guided by our resident entomologist. Our primary means of insect control is mechanical; that is, we physically remove the target pests with our hands or vacuum power and we place barriers that keep the pests out. Other practiced methods include promotion of natural enemies and the use of trap crops. OMRI approved organic pesticides are used only as a last resort. We fertilize our fields with composted resources from our farm mixed with horse manure from a neighbor.(This listing was last updated on April 19, 2013)
