Silver Wheel Farm

Harrisville, Pennsylvania

We specialize in a large variety of lettuce and greens, growing both every week of the year, including the winter months. We also grow a full range of other vegetables plus many herbs and some berries. Our products are "handcrafted"- no tillage-by-tractor here! We prefer the quiet rhythm of the scythe and hoe, which focus an almost meditative attention on the task and allow one to fully enjoy the songs of the birds and patterns of the clouds. The only tillage machine we use is a BCS, which does the least damage to soil structure and soil creatures. (Our tractor is used for brush-hogging only, not plowing or tillage.) All farming practices at Silver Wheel are chosen and performed with utmost respect for the flora, fauna and fungi which, while mostly invisible, are very much alive in the soil. The fields encompass a spiritual element as well, enhanced with Biodynamic preparations and practices. Our intention is to create a "whole farm", wherein all parts are interwoven to express the dance of wind, rain, sun, and soil. Please see our website for more information about our farm and our 2011 Fresh Harvest on-farm CSA program. This is a unique program in our region, allowing consumers to harvest their choice of produce from the fields. We can be found at Farmers @ Firehouse Farmers Market on Penn Ave in the Strip in Pittsburgh, Saturday mornings May -Nov. We are founding members of Northwest PA Growers Cooperative, and grow for their multifarm CSA and Winter Market webstore.
